Xavier landed its first commitment of the 2021 recruiting class when big man Cesare Edwards announced his pledge to the Musketeers Friday night.
Edwards, 6’10”, is from Hartsville, South Carolina, chose Xavier after being heavily recruited by South Carolina, Clemson, and Florida State.
When 247sports released their updated recruiting rankings this past week, Edwards jumped from 145th to 102nd in the rankings, bringing his composite ranking up to 113th.
Edwards has a versatile offensive game consistent with a modern big, with range that extends out past the three-point line. He’s also shown an ability to handle the ball, though he’s still improving in that area, and finishes well inside the paint.
In addition, Edwards has a range of moves in the post, including a solid jump hook.
He’s not an explosive athlete, but he moves well and has good agility. Edwards is also a very good rebounder. He still needs to add weight and get stronger, which will help improve his defense. However, given the quality of Xavier’s strength program and the improvement of Dieonte Miles in that area, Xavier fans shouldn’t be overly concerned.
Xavier is expected to add at least three more commitments in the 2021 class, including a forward and two wings.
